India’s first mega ports: Key facts

India notified its first four mega ports on September 25, 2026.

The ports are Mundra, Deendayal (Kandla), Jawaharlal Nehru Port and Paradip.

The classification is based on annual cargo-handling thresholds.

Mundra is the only privately operated port among the four.

The classification is valid for five years under the Indian Ports Act, 2025.

Mundra Port, operated by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone, is the only privately owned facility among the four.

The mega port classification is expected to be reviewed periodically based on cargo-handling performance.
