The former Tata Football Academy graduate and East Bengal goalkeeper joins Pune Pioneers FC as Goalkeeping Coach, bringing professional playing experience and years of specialist coaching expertise.
A strong football career is often built on the foundations established during a player’s formative years. For Avijit Ghosh, those foundations were laid at Tata Football Academy, one of India’s recognised football development institutions. Having progressed from youth football to representing established professional clubs, Ghosh has now embarked on a new chapter, joining Pune Pioneers Football Club as their Goalkeeping Coach.
His appointment brings a combination of playing experience, competitive exposure and specialist coaching knowledge to a club that is continuing to strengthen its football development structure.
Ghosh will be responsible for overseeing goalkeepers across all age groups at Pune Pioneers FC, working with players from both the residential academy and the non-residential evening programme.
Four years at Tata Football Academy
Ghosh’s association with Tata Football Academy between 2003 and 2007 was an important stage in his football development.
The academy provided him with an environment in which he could develop his technical ability, understand the demands of organised football and prepare for the transition into the senior professional game.
His youth football achievements had already demonstrated his potential. Ghosh was part of the Bengal U-16 team that won the National Championship in 2002 and the Bengal U-19 team that secured the Dr B.C. Roy Trophy in 2006.
His development also included international exposure. In 2005, he travelled to England with Tata Football Academy, where the team won the Wells Cup. The following year, he was involved in the India U-19 setup and participated in a camp and tour to Sri Lanka.
These experiences formed part of a development pathway that eventually took him into professional football.
A career with established Indian clubs
Following his time at Tata Football Academy, Ghosh went on to represent several clubs across Indian football.
His professional career included East Bengal FC, Air India FC, Mumbai Tigers, Sreebhumi Samiti, Aryan FC and Royal Wahingdoh FC.
His association with East Bengal during the 2008–09 and 2009–10 seasons was particularly significant. He was part of the squad that won the Federation Cup in 2009–10 and the Calcutta Football League Premier Division in 2010. He was also part of the squad that finished as Durand Cup runners-up in 2009.
His time at the Kolkata club included participation in the AFC Cup in 2010, providing exposure to continental competition.
Ghosh subsequently represented Air India FC in the I-League and Mumbai Tigers in the I-League Second Division. During his time with Mumbai Tigers, he was also part of the squad that finished as Durand Cup runners-up.
Another important phase of his playing career came with Royal Wahingdoh FC. The club finished third in the 2014–15 I-League season, adding another significant achievement to Ghosh’s professional football experience.
Across these clubs, he experienced different football environments and competitive demands, gaining an understanding of what is required to perform as a goalkeeper at senior level.
Learning from established coaches
Throughout his playing journey, Ghosh had the opportunity to work under several recognised coaches in Indian football.
These included Subhash Bhowmick, Bimal Ghosh, Santosh Kashyap, Godfrey Pereira and Philippe De Ridder.
Working within different coaching environments allowed him to experience varied approaches to training, preparation and match management. For a goalkeeper, understanding these different perspectives can be particularly valuable, given the position’s responsibilities in organising the defence, communicating with teammates and responding to changing match situations.
His experiences as a player would later provide a foundation for his transition into specialist coaching.
From playing to developing the next generation
After his playing career, Ghosh moved into coaching, focusing on the development of goalkeepers.
He began his coaching journey with the Hooghly District Sports Association in 2017–18, followed by work with the Kalyani Football League. His subsequent assignments included Kolkata Soccer Academy, Suruchi Sangha, Khidderpore SC, Kalighat MS, City AC, George Telegraph FC and SKM Sports Foundation.
His coaching experience has covered different competitive environments, including the Calcutta Football League, Reliance Development League and AIFF U-17 Youth League.
Ghosh holds an AIFF C Coaching Licence and brings nearly a decade of specialist goalkeeping coaching experience into his new role.
A new opportunity at Pune Pioneers FC
At Pune Pioneers FC, Ghosh will oversee the development of goalkeepers across the club’s different age groups.
The club operates a residential football academy in Wagholi and a non-residential evening academy programme. Its wider approach combines professional football training with competitive match opportunities, education partnerships and additional player-development support.
The appointment of a dedicated Goalkeeping Coach is intended to strengthen the specialist training available to players and establish greater continuity in the development of goalkeepers throughout the academy.
Ghosh’s initial sessions have been positively received by players, while fellow coaches have observed encouraging improvements in the goalkeepers’ work.
Interestingly, Ghosh and Pune Pioneers FC Club Director Ryan Roy Shah had previously crossed paths at Mumbai Tigers during the 2012–13 season, when Ghosh was part of the senior squad and Shah was involved with the youth setup.
His relocation from Kolkata to Pune is also a significant personal commitment, with his wife and young child remaining in Kolkata as he takes on this new professional opportunity.
For Ghosh, the appointment represents an opportunity to apply the experience gained through his own football journey to the development of younger players. For Pune Pioneers FC, it adds a specialist with a background spanning youth football, professional competition and coaching.
The journey that began with structured development at Tata Football Academy has now come full circle in another way: Ghosh will be responsible for helping young goalkeepers build the foundations they need to progress in Indian football.
