India Cabinet approves 10-year jail, Rs 10 crore fine for paper leaks
India’s Cabinet has approved a bill proposing 10 years’ jail and a Rs 10 crore fine for organised examination paper leaks.
India’s Union Cabinet approved a bill on Friday proposing a jail term of up to 10 years and a fine of up to Rs 10 crore for organised examination paper leaks.
The bill amends the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024, raising the minimum prison term for paper-leak convictions from three years to five.
The approval came hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the government’s intent to toughen the law.
The move follows national outrage over the 2024 NEET-UG and UGC-NET paper leaks, which had led to the original Act.
The bill is expected to be taken up for consideration and passing in Parliament on Monday.
