Shubman Gill overtakes Daryl Mitchell in ODI rankings

Shubman Gill has overtaken New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell to top the ICC’s ODI batting rankings.

Gill’s rise followed strong scores in India’s recent ODI series against England, where he made an unbeaten 80 in the first match and 77 in the third ODI at Lord’s.

Mitchell has fallen to second place after a quieter run of form, including 65 in an opening ODI against West Indies followed by two scores of 28.

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma remain third and fourth respectively in the latest ranking update.

In a separate ranking shift, 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi jumped 230 places in the T20I batting rankings to sit at 48th, up from 278th ahead of a series against Zimbabwe.

The rise followed his tally of 151 runs across a three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe, which included two half-centuries.

Gill’s climb to the top comes as he continues to lead India’s white-ball side, a role he has held since October 2025 after replacing Rohit Sharma ahead of the Australia tour.

The updated rankings follow India’s recent tour of England, where several batters produced strong performances in the white-ball leg.

England claimed the three-match series 2-1, with India’s six-wicket win in the first ODI at Birmingham followed by England victories at Cardiff and Lord’s. Joe Root was named Player of the Series after scoring 249 runs in the three matches.

Gill’s strong individual returns in a series India ultimately lost highlight the gap that can open up between team results and personal form over a short white-ball series.

ICC batting rankings are updated regularly based on recent performances, with points weighted more heavily toward matches played against stronger opposition and in bigger series.

Gill has held the India ODI captaincy since October 2025, when he replaced Rohit Sharma for the tour of Australia, and has since led the side through series against New Zealand and Australia.
