Rajasthan, Gujarat brace for extremely heavy rain under red alert

Rajasthan, Gujarat and Madhya Maharashtra are bracing for extremely heavy rain after the IMD issued a red alert.

Parts of eastern Rajasthan, Gujarat and Madhya Maharashtra are bracing for extremely heavy rain after the India Meteorological Department issued a red alert.

Isolated locations could see rainfall exceeding 204.5mm, with broader areas expected to record between 115.6mm and 204.4mm.

The IMD has warned of flash floods, overflowing rivers and localized infrastructure damage as a result of the rain.

The system is being driven by a well-marked low-pressure area over southeast Rajasthan and adjoining Madhya Pradesh, along with an upper-air cyclonic circulation.

A separate cyclonic circulation remains active over the northwest Bay of Bengal, and a western disturbance continues to affect Jammu and Kashmir.

Thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds are also forecast across several states, with advisories issued for residents, farmers and travellers.
